An elegant cake smash

A month ago Miss Draper turned the big ONE. It was a special day filled with all the emotions. I knew I wanted to do something special to remember this time in our lives and this big milestone (for her and us as parents after all we survived the first year). So I did the whole cliche cake smash photoshoot and I don't regret a second of it!!!
Location: The Robins Nest
Photographer: Kayla Robins
Cake: made to mama
Balloon Decor: made to mama
Headpiece: Etsy

At first Draper was unsure about this whole 'cake' thing. She was cautious and slowly explore the cake, greenery and would much rather just play with the '1' sign that eat the cake. Knowing my daughter, I thought she would dug right into the cake but I think it was a little big and overwhelming.

Mom to the rescue! After a while of her playing around, I decided to cut her a piece and try feeding her. I knew once she tasted the sweet sugary cake and icing she would love it. And she did! :)
I made the cake the night before following William Sonona Ombre Layer Cake Recipe and it was a hit! Heads up, you need to buy the proper pans for this kind of cake if you want it to have layers. I got mine at Michaels for $22 and have made multiple cakes with it.

It wouldn't be complete if we didn't get dad and mom into the scene for some pics.

Dad is hungry too!

Draper refused her nap that day so she was fusssssy! But you would have never been able to tell by looking at these pictures. That is because Kayla did an amazing job at making the session fun for everyone with her camera cosies, music, stuffed animals etc! She is a pro and we couldn't be happier with these photos.
We finished the session, covered in icing. Our bellies full of sugar. And big smiles on our face. The second we got in the car to drive home Draper fell asleep. So mom and dad stopped for a little Poutinis poutine (aka the best poutine in Toronto) and enjoyed a quite drive home.
Needless to say the cake smash and entire day was a huge success!
Stay tuned for a separate blog post all about how I made the floral garland for the giant balloon! It's easier than it looks, I promise. :)
