Introducing your baby to solids brings out allllll the feelings - excited, nervous, anxious... the list goes on. If this is you right now, don't worry you are not alone! I've been there and I can tell you (now that my daughter is 12 months old) that your journey with solids doesn't have to be scary, it can be fun!
I decided to take the baby led weaning approach when introducing solids with Draper because I found she was more interested in feeding herself rather than airplane spoons. What's baby led weaning you ask? I think Fortified Family explains it best! Baby Led Weaning is...
A practical, safe, hands-on approach to starting solid foods with babies age 6 months+
An alternative method to feeding that does not include force-feeding baby pureed food by spoon
A centuries old, natural approach to letting babies self-feed
Basically you empower your child to feed him/herself safe whole foods rather than force-feeding them purees and that nasty infant cereals with a spoon.
If this is something you're interested in, I'd recommend check out some of these amazing videos from The Fortified Family. They also offer an online workshop to help you get started. There is no shortage of information out there to support you.
100 First Foods
After I decided that baby led weaning was right for me and Draper I decided to challenge myself to a goal of introducing Draper to 100 foods before she turned one. Guess what, I did it! And you can too.
100 different foods might sound daunting, but it's actually very doable and there are tons of great benefits for both you and your baby!
Research shows us that the greater the number of foods, flavors, tastes and textures baby is exposed to, the less likely she is to become a picky eater. We'll see if this is actually the case with Draper when she grows up, but as of now she pretty much eats whatever we're eating so that's a win! Right?
She's also developed amazing fine motor skills (i.e. pincer grasp) and can chew and move food around in her mouth like a pro. She also loves using utensils and is working on her scooping and stabbing skills but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed with how developed she is and I truly believe that is because I have encourage and empowered her to feed herself.
Plus, I have saved SO much time by not having to feed her myself. I often prepare lunch or dinner for myself while she is eating. That way, I'm in the kitchen supervising her and watching her eat and explore foods but I'm also multi-tasking which has been such a blessing. Or else I dont know when I'd find the time to eat.
Don't wait. Get your 100 foods list!
The 100 foods before ONE challenge was one of the best things I decided to do in Draper's first year of life. I want that for you so I've made a list of the first 100 foods Draper tried and you can download it here for FREE!
This list contains a mixture of fruits, veggies, grains, meat and plant based protein, dairy and eggs plus some guidance on how to serve them. Have fun with it and don't forget to tag @made_to_mama on instagram so I can follow along your journey!
Oh PS. It's messy, so be prepared for food flying everywhere!
